In order to implement the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and promote the high-quality development of agricultural foreign cooperation, the Foreign Economic Cooperation Center (FECC) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has worked closely with the BILL&MELINDA GATES foundation and the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Agency (ATA) to jointly implement the “China-Ethiopia Agricultural Cooperation Project” since 2018. The project focused on promoting the improvement of agricultural product competitiveness in Ethiopia and strengthening connection with international consumer market. The Research on China-Ethiopia Agricultural Value Chain Cooperation (Chinese and English bilingual edition) as the cooperation case was officially published lately.

China and Ethiopia have the potential to expand cooperation in beef cattle and sesame industry. Ethiopia’s cattle stock ranks fifth in the world and first in Africa, and is the main source of livelihood for local farmers. Ethiopia’s sesame export ranks first in the world and is Ethiopia’s second biggest foreign exchange earning product. China is a major consumer and importer of beef and sesame in the world, and also a major importer of sesame in Ethiopia.

To explore how to transform the cooperation potential into actions, FECC invited senior experts in key links of beef cattle and sesame industry value chain and more than 10 leading enterprises of the industry to conduct in-depth desk research and relevant investigation, and organized delegations to go to Ethiopia twice in 2019 to carry out field research and obtain first-hand materials. This book adopts the “Agricultural Value Chain International Cooperation Model” as key research method. It compares the experience and technology of Chinas beef cattle and sesame industry, analyzes Chinas demand for the international market, identifies the advantages and disadvantages of key links of Ethiopia’s beef cattle and sesame industry value chain, integrates domestic and international, public and private sector resources, and conducts technical studies on potential cooperation plans. This book proposed the value chain cooperation model combining the industry, academic institutions and R&D, linking the upstream and downstream parties, coordinating agricultural development cooperation and investment cooperation. This model have achieved initial success in the above industry cases. In the meantime, this book provides potential investors and partners with information on foreign investment policies of Ethiopia. It collected and organized comprehensive lists of incentive measures applicable to industrial park developers  and the status of the four comprehensive agricultural industrial parks in Ethiopia.

The “Agricultural Value Chain International Cooperation Model” and practical cases provided in this book can serve as reference for more cooperation in the future!
