China-Canada Agriculture and Fisheries Business Cooperation Forum is Held

The China-Canada Agriculture and Fisheries Business Cooperation Forum was held on October 17, 2018, in Ottawa, the Capital of Canada. Minister Han Changfu, Canadian Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Lawrence MacAulay and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard Sean Casey attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Minister-Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Canada Heng Xiaojun also attended the ceremony and FECC Director-General Yang Yi was the host of the opening ceremony.
The forum focused on the two countries’ cooperation on agriculture and fishery technology, investment and trade and organized the following activities: the photo exhibition of China-Canada cooperation, the opening ceremony and the speeches of the ministers, the signing of cooperation projects, and the interaction among companies and research institutes of the two countries for cooperation projects. The forum was attended by about 110 representatives from 54 entities, including the following: large state-owned enterprises like China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corporation(COFCO) and Sinochem Agro Co.,Ltd; companies and research institutes from Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jiangsu, Fujian and Shenzhen and other provinces and cities; China-Canada agriculture and fishery cooperation organizations like China-Canada Beef Industry Alliance and China Canada Ocean and Fisheries Partnership; Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food of Canada and Ministry of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, and Canadian associations and companies like Canola Council of Canada and Canada Pork International; and international and regional financial institutions like Asian Investment Fund.
Five agriculture and fishery cooperation projects, such as the Letter of Intent for Legume Cooperation and the Letter of Intent of Companies Joining the China Canada Ocean and Fisheries Partnership and the China-Canada Agriculture and Fishery Technology Demonstration Zone (In Preparation), were signed in the presence of the ministers. The projects cover such areas as farming, fishery, agrochemical and agriculture investment and consolidate the foundation of the two countries’ cooperation. When it was time for interaction, with the focus on investment and trade priorities of concern to both sides, the participants were divided into groups to find partners and negotiate projects according to their needs. After the opening ceremony there was a bilateral talk held by Minister Han Changfu and Canadian Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard for the promotion of agriculture and fishery cooperation between China and Canada.
Canada was one of the first western countries to establish diplomatic ties with China. The two agricultural powers have maintained a good agricultural partnership featuring a sound system, a solid foundation, great momentum and a bright prospect. This forum is an effective mechanism of communication between the two countries’ agriculture and fishery companies, associations and science and research institutes, and will further promote the bilateral pragmatic cooperation in agriculture and fisheries.
